The materials we are using

Welcome to our newest follower, Soumya, great to have you here! As you were interested to know what we have purchased and are using with BC, I thought I'd share it for everyone to read.

First of all we purchased and are using all 7 of the Doman books. We are doing the reading and maths program at the moment, and are also introducing the encyclopedic knowledge program. We are doing lots of vestibular activities as suggested in the physical book and are swimming as well. I need to properly read the encyclopedic knowledge and physical superiority books and this is on my (very long) to-do list. We built a crawling track too but didn't quite follow the instructions and in the end ours is a bit wide but is still doing the job nicely!

I have made my own words, math and encyclopedic knowledge cards. For the words, I just typed up words on a landscape set page in Microsoft Word and made the fonts as large as possible where the word was all on one line. I put two words to a page, printed and laminated them and then cut them in half with a guillotine. For the math dots we used A4 pages and printed and laminated them. I have done the same thing with the encyclopedic knowledge cards of which I've done wild animals already and have made but not printed water animals, pets, farm animals, birds, dogs and reptiles. I also purchased a few cheap calenders at the $2 shop which I will pull apart and laminate the pictures. I'm looking forward to the January sales when the calenders will all be marked down to 50% off and I can get some more expensive ones to laminate and use as encyclopedic knowledge. I've seen some great ones on art, music, landmarks, countries and animals.

We purchased the entire tweedlewink package of DVD's and we are currently trying to show BC one lesson per day. We also have the trebellina music DVD and just got Your Baby Can Read. I am also waiting for my delivery of the Baby Signing Time DVD's. We are currently signing to BC using signs I learnt on Baby Einstein See and Sign and those I've learnt off the many ASL iPhone apps I downloaded.

We also do swimming, gymbaroo and both myself and my husband do lots of activities with BC to stimulate his vestibular system. We try to talk lots to him, read lots of stories and take him on 'adventures' such as walks, trips to the park, outings with the mother's groups and even just a quick trip to the shops!

I hope this helps and answers some questions!

  1. Thanks for the warm welcome Aussie mom of one:)
That was quite an informative post. I have been researching a lot this past week on early education for infants. So far this is what we have been doing :

    1. Doman math dots
    2. Phonics and Alphabets
    3. Baby Einstein video
    4. Atlas reading

I planning to make some encyclopedic and word cards. Do you need to have picture representation for the word cards? I mean do u have the picture and then the word underneath the picture? Could you also please explain how you laminate the A4 cards? Do you get it done in a shop? We are still debating on whether to get 'your baby can read' dvd. Where do u get this dvd for cheap?I also need to start reading to my baby a lot more. We don't have a good collection of books yet. Where do u buy all your books from?

Thanks a lot for your help and keep up the good work:)

    Cheers,
    Soumya

  2. Soumya,

It sounds like you are doing a wonderful job! What country do you live in? I'm sure you can purchase a laminator in your local department store. Then you buy these plastic laminating pouches and you put the A4 piece of paper between the laminating pouch and feed it into the laminator. The machine works on a roller and produces lots of heat and as the pouch is rolled through the machine, the heat seals it together thus that the paper is now laminated!

When I'm doing just the reading words I do not provide a picture representation but when I'm doing encyclopedic knowledge, I sometimes do. So my word cards are just written words and I show them to him while reading aloud the word.

I don't have any recommendation on getting YBCR cheap as we know there are many fake copies on Ebay at the moment so I'm not sure you can be sure of what you're getting unless you buy it from their website direct. It certainly isn't cheap and this is VERY frustrating!

I am a big fan of baby markets and love getting lots of bargains for BC from the markets. A lot of our books come from the markets or are gifts. I also bought him the Mr Men and Dr Seuss collections on sale at Target and we love reading these to him!

The best piece of advice I have is to get on to the BrillKids forums if you're not already? I might seem knowledgable and helpful now, but trust me, I know NOTHING compared to these Mums and Dads. If you are interested, check out the forum's website at http://www.brillkids.com/ra.php?46994. By using this special link, and by using the coupon code BKAFF46994 (just cut and paste it when you sign up), you will get a bonus 500 points just for becoming a member through my recommendation, and you will get 2000 bonus loyalty points if you choose to make a purchase from the BrillKids Online Store (you have to use the coupon here too if you want the 2000 bonus points). Hope this all helps! Looking forward to hearing more about how you're going!!

  3. Hi Aussie mum of one,

Thanks once again for all that info.We are living here in Australia. I am quite impressed to see ur 'goal list' and I am sure that u will be able to get it all done, good luck :).

Well, yeah ikwum...there are lots of fake stuff out there on ebay so I guess its best to get it from YBCR website.

I am already a member of brillkids and like you said I am just amazed at how much info is out there on early learning.

As for the books I have decided to go to the library every week and get new books (they have something called ten minute a day pack which is meant for babies). I thought its best not to spend money on baby books.

Keep up the good work and wish u all the best.

    Regards,
    Soumya

  4. Hi there!

You say 'living in Australia' so I'm wondering if these means you aren't native Aussies? Where abouts are you living? I am in Victoria. I haven't heard of this ten minute a day program but I will definitely see if our library has this available too! I have borrowed books from the library to read to BC before and I will do this again soon, it is hard though as he tries to suck and eat all the books and I don't want to ruin any that aren't ours.

Best wishes with your program and looking forward to speaking soon!

  5. May I buy all the Doman books and relevant material from you if you do not have any use of it now?
